About
Alon Lischinsky has a Ph.D. in Linguistics (Discourse Analysis), and is presently employed as a lecturer in the Department of History, Philosophy and Religion, Oxford Brookes University. He was formerly a postdoctoral fellow within the Initiative for the Humanities project at Umeå University.
His current research uses corpus methods to analyse the conceptual models and principles of classification that the business community brings to public debates about development, sustainability and the environment, through a focus on Corporate Social Responsibility reports.
This work attempts to combine Corpus Linguistics tools with more qualitative Critical Discourse Analysis, to reliably show how corporate reports introduce conceptual shifts and managerialist presuppositions in this disputed field. The first part of the project, currently underway, involves the compilation and tagging of a 1.2 million word corpus of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports from Swedish companies. A second stage will involve ethnographic analyses of producers and users of these materials.
His main research focus is in applying critical discourse analysis to investigate shifts in social relations of production, especially the social impact of managerialism as an "expert system"; societal representations of what work is, where it should be conducted, and under what conditions; and the managerialisation of the self and personal life.
His doctoral dissertation (entitled "The construction of expert knowledge in Popular Management Literature", and forthcoming in the Corpus and Discourse series published by Continuum) explored the linguistic construction of expert knowledge (and professional experts) in management books for the general public.
Other long-standing interests include the demarcation and hierarchisation of knowledge fields in both expert and lay communities; the argumentative use of fictional and non-fictional narratives; and multimodal strategies in persuasion.
