RESEARCH
My research interests are unfashionably broad. While much of my work focuses primarily on the philosophy of action and its explanation it typically cuts across a variety of traditionally distinct fields: philosophy of history, moral psychology, metaphilosophy, and the philosophy of science. I also work on related topics (from causation to moral particularism) and have a special interest in Aristotle, Hume, the later Wittgenstein, Hegel, and ancient tragedy.
I welcome comments on any drafts I upload.
Currently, I am finishing a monograph on the theory of motivation (for Palgrave) and beginning an introduction to the philosophy of action (for Wiley-Blackwell). I have also been working on a critical introduction to Davidson's philosophy of action and am the Philosophy of Action editor at PhilPapers:

My edited collection on action explanation is now out:

A Companion to the Philosophy of Action (which I co-edited with Timothy O' Connor) is now in production (see 'Books' for a table of contents). I am currently finalising a volume on Hegel on Action (Palgrave Macmillan, with Arto Laitinen), after which I will begin editorial work on the proceedings from the forthcoming Royal Institute of Philosophy Conference on Human Nature, to be held at Oxford Brookes in 2010 (Cambridge University Press, with Mark Cain). I am also co-editor (with Stephen Boulter) of Palgrave Macmillan's 'Philosophers in Depth' series:

I welcome enquiries from potential MA, MPhil or PhD students who wish to work on moral psychology or any other issues in the philosophy of action and its explanation.
