About

My current research fits broadly in to an examination of the ideational constitution of social tension, its material effects and precursors, and how institutions and groups contribute to its lessening and/or heightening.

My PhD research examines the UK’s Community Cohesion policy framework, incepted in 2001 after the so-called race riots in Bradford, Oldham and Burnley, alongside New Labour’s welfare reform project between 2001 and 2010. It aims to provide an understanding of how social structures and more specific support structures contribute to levels of ‘cohesion’ (broadly defined) within the UK. It examines how the relationship between welfare policy and community cohesion policy contributes to levels of ‘togetherness’, alongside defining tendencies towards or away from social unrest such as the recent riots in 2011.

It further assesses the role of inequality in determining levels of cohesion in Western liberal welfare states.
